A

'Abd - A male slave, a slave of Allah

'Ad - An ancient tribe that lived after Nuh (pbuh). It was prosperous, but disobedient to Allah. It was destroyed with a violent destructive westerly wind.

Adhan - The call to Prayer pronounced loudly to indicate that the time of praying is due. It is called for all the five obligatory prayers daily from the mosques.

A.H. - (After Hijrah) Hijrah means emigration. The Islamic calendar starts from the year Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) emigrated from the city of Mecca to Medina, in 622 C.E.

Ahkam - "legal status" According to Islamic law. There are five kinds.

  •  Compulsory (Wajib)

  •  Desirable but not compulsory (Mustahab)

  •  Forbidden (Haram)

  •  Disliked but not forbidden (Makruh)

  •  Lawful (Halal)

Ajwah - A kind of date.

Ahmad - Another name of Muhammad (pbuh).

Alim - (pl. Ulamah) A religious scholar in Islam.

Allah - The greatest and most inclusive of the names of God. It is an Arabic word of rich and varied meaning, denoting the one who is adored in worship, who creates all that exists, who has priority over all creation, who is lofty and hidden, who confounds all human understanding.

Allahu Akbar - Allah is the Most Great.

Al-Amanah - The moral responsibility, trust, honesty and all the duties which Allah has ordained.

Amah - A female slave.

Amin - O' Allah, accept our invocation.

Ansar - The companions of the Prophet (pbuh) from the inhabitants of Medina. They embraced Islam, received and entertained the Muslim immigrants of Mecca and other places.

Aqiqah - It is the slaughtering or sacrificing of one or two sheep on the occasion of the birth of a child. A token of gratitude to Allah.

Aqra Halqa - It is an exclamatory expression of disapproval.

Arsfah - The ninth day of the month of Dhul-Hijjah, on which the pilgrims stay in the Arafat plain till sun set.

Arafat - Is a pilgrimage site, about 25 kilometers east of Mecca.

Arak - A tree from which toothbrushes (Siwak) are made.

Al-Arba'ah - The Four compilers of ahadith
Abu Dawud, Nasa'i, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah.

Arsh - Compensation given in case of someone's injury caused by another person.

Asabah - All male relatives of the deceased person from the fathers side.

Ashab As-Suffah - They were about eighty or more men who used to stay and have religious teachings in the Prophets mosque in Medina, acquired knowledge and had dedicated themselves wholly to serving Islam.

Ashab As-Sunan - The compilers of the Prophetic ahadith on the Islamic jurisprudence.

Ashura - The 10th day of the month of Muharram. The first month of the Islamic calendar.

'Asr - The late afternoon Prayer, the third compulsory Prayer of the day. It can be prayed between mid afternoon and a little before sunset. It is also the name of Surah 103 of the Holy Quran.

Assalamu 'Alaikum - 'Peace be on you.'

Aurah - That part of the body which is illegal to expose to others.

Ayah - (pl. ayat) A sign, proofs, evidences, verses, lessons.

Ayyam At-Tashriq - The term used for the 11,12, and 13th day of Dhul-Hijjah.

Ayyim - A women who has already had a sexual experience, may be a widow or divorced.

Az-Zihar - One saying to his wife that she is unlawful to him like his mother.

Azl - Coitus interruption pulling out the penis from the vagina at the time of ejaculation of semen as a form of birth control.

Azlam - Arrows used by Arabs of pre Islamic time.
